Smart metering

Electronic meters that send the reading by themselves. You do not have to do anything: no appointments, no technician in your home.

The service

What it is, in plain words

Smart metering means measuring that happens by itself. In practice, the old meter that somebody has to read by looking at it is replaced by an electronic one. It records what you use and sends the reading by radio.

The meter measures the water or the heat you use, exactly as before. What changes is that nobody has to read it in person, dial by dial: the device sends the figure to our systems on its own, securely. From there we use it for metering and cost allocation. That means working out how much each home has used, and allocating the building's costs.

It is the same technology we use on water meters, heat meters and heat cost allocators, the devices on the radiators. If a word is not clear, all the definitions are in the glossary.

How it works

Two ways of collecting the reading

Either way the result is the same: the reading reaches us without you having to wait at home for anyone.

Walk-by reading

Walk-by means just that: on foot. Our technician walks along the street or through the shared parts of the building, and receives the data from every meter nearby by radio. Nobody rings your bell and nobody comes into your home.

  • No appointment to arrange
  • The technician does not come into your home
  • The whole building read in a single pass

Remote reading

The devices send the readings to our systems automatically, without anyone having to come to the building. It is the easiest way, and it is also the one the law requires for heat metering systems.

  • Data sent automatically
  • More frequent and regular readings
  • Meets the 2027 requirement

The benefits

What you gain, in practice

Smart metering makes life simpler for the people who live in the building and for the people who manage it.

If you live in the building

  • No waiting at home: the reading happens with no appointment and no visit.
  • Bills based on real use, not on estimates: you pay for what you actually use.
  • Fewer surprise adjustments — the corrections that come when a bill was based on an estimate — because the readings are regular.

If you manage a building

  • More frequent and more complete consumption data, so cost allocation is accurate and clear.
  • Leaks and other problems spotted early: use that is out of the ordinary shows up at once.
  • Less chasing and less to manage: no readings to collect by hand.

Your privacy. Consumption data serves one purpose only: allocating the water and heating costs correctly. We do not use it for anything else. All the details are in the privacy notice.

Legal deadline

From 2027 remote reading is compulsory

By 1 January 2027 heat metering devices have to be readable remotely. This comes from the EU energy efficiency directive, brought into Italian law by D.Lgs. 102/2014 and later amendments.

If your building still has devices that are read by hand, replacing or upgrading them has to be planned. With smart metering the system already meets the rules. We check how things stand and suggest the work that suits you best, without redoing what can be kept.
