How to read the postal payment slip
The slip attached to your bill arrives ready filled in: there is nothing for you to write. Here we go through what each box holds, and where you can pay it.
Step by step
The payment slip, box by box
The slip attached to your bill comes ready filled in: there is nothing for you to write. It is in two parts: on the left the payment receipt, which you keep, and on the right the credit receipt.
The document you see is a sample: the figures are made up. The document shown is the real one, and it is in Italian: that is the document you have in your hands. Each note tells you what to look for on it. As you scroll, the slip stays in view with the active box highlighted; the same notes are also in a list you can open one at a time.
-
Box 1: The amount to pay
It is already printed in figures, and it matches the total of the bill. It appears twice, once on each receipt.
The two parts of the slip are headed RICEVUTA DI VERSAMENTO and RICEVUTA DI ACCREDITO. On some bills for a small amount there may be a line that lets you hold the payment over: in that case the amount is charged on the next bill, with nothing added.
-
Box 2: The account and whose name it is in
It gives the post office account number the payment goes to, and the name the account is in, which is L.I.R.A. S.p.A.
On the slip the two lines read SUL C/C N. and INTESTATO A. Before paying, always check that the name is L.I.R.A. S.p.A.: it is a good habit against attempted scams.
-
Box 3: Who is making the payment: your details
This box carries the name and the address of whoever makes the payment, which means your details, already printed.
-
Box 4: Account number, bill number and due date
In small print there are the references that tie the slip to your bill: the account number, the bill number, the period and the due date.
The three labels read CODICE UTENTE, N. FATTURA and SCADENZA. They are the same details you find on the front of the bill: if you pay some other way, by bank transfer for example, you need them for the payment reference. The guide to your bill explains them.
-
Box 5: The code for paying online (CBILL)
With CBILL you can pay the bill from your computer or from your bank’s app, without going to a counter. You need two codes.
The box is headed CODICE CBILL. CBILL is a service run by the Italian banks. In your app look for the CBILL function (or pagamenti, payments), then:
- find us with the company code S4346: we appear as “L.I.R.A. SPA”. This code is always the same, for every bill;
- type in the payment reference (codice identificativo del pagamento) shown in this box: it changes with every bill, and it is what tells the bank which bill you are paying.
Any fee depends on your bank.
-
Box 6: The strip the machines read
The band at the bottom, with numbers and bars, is what the machines at the counter read: do not write and do not stamp anything in this area.

Where you can pay
Choose whichever way suits you best
The slip can be paid in many places: the full, up-to-date list is on the sheet attached to your bill, headed Modalità di pagamento.
In person
- At any post office, with the slip exactly as it is.
- At bank counters and at the partner shops listed on the sheet attached to your bill.
- Any fees depend on whoever takes the payment, not on L.I.R.A.
From home
- With CBILL from your computer or your bank's app: find us with the company code S4346, then use the payment reference shown in box 5 of the guide.
- By bank transfer: put the bill number and your account number in the payment reference.
- With direct debit you stop thinking about due dates: find out how to set it up.
Watch out for scams: L.I.R.A. never collects payments at your door. If someone turns up asking for money for a bill, do not pay, and call us straight away on 051 226693.
